What a word: “Sportswashing”
Means: When someone or something (such as a person, a company or a country) that has done bad things spends (a lot of) money on something sports-related (such as a team, a league or an event). The purpose is to make people forget about their bad reputation. There are many -“washing” words that come from the original term “whitewashing.” (See more below.)
Why now: “LIV” Golf was created in 2020 and funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Many famous professional golfers who were members of the PGA Tour, which is based in the USA, left the PGA to join LIV. But some who did not said they did not join because of Saudi Arabia’s reputation for human rights abuses. The issue (and the word “sportwashing”) came up again last week, when LIV and the PGA announced that they would become partners and many people were shocked and/or angry.
In the past: Before LIV-PGA, “sportwashing” was most famously used to describe Qatar hosting the World Cup in 2022. Other examples are the Winter Olympics in China, the World Cup in Russia and Azerbaijan in 2015, when some experts say the term was invented.
