What’s a “Global Town Square”? [เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ in English]

Do you use Twitter? Have you ever heard it called a “global town square” and wondered what that means?

Imagine a time centuries ago before you were born. Before the internet, before television news, before newspapers, before telephones, before radio.

Most people lived in tiny towns or villages. In each town there was a “square,” a public area where people could do things like buy and sell things, listen to music or see other entertainment. People could also meet and share news about what was happening in other parts of the town or even outside of the town.

So if you believe Elon Musk and the new CEO of Twitter, Linda Yaccarino, Twitter is like a “town square” where people share information. Thanks to the internet, this “town square” isn’t just in one little town. It’s “global,” meaning what people say on Twitter can reach all over the world.

Not alone

Thanks to the internet, Twitter is not the only global town square. There are many. Some people think there are too many. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram … these are all global town squares.

I was thinking about what an old-fashioned and boring metaphor “global town square” is when I was reading a news article by the BBC about the new CEO.

It quoted a guy from a finance company who said he believed Yaccarino was a good choice for the job. “We believe Linda has a solid vision for Twitter with a lot of wood to chop that can be turned around.”

Corporate crap

WTF?

Have you heard of the term “corporate speak”? Other ways you might see it are “corporate jargon,” “business jargon”, “business speak”, “workplace speak” etc. The most important word to understand is “jargon,” which is when people in business or other professions use language that (mostly) only they use and (mostly) only they understand.

To the rest of us, jargon is often confusing and/or annoying.

Saying someone has “a lot of wood to chop ” is jargon I’ve never heard before. But I can’t blame the guy who said it for being confusing. (It’s actually easy to understand.) But I do blame him for being boring. And lazy. He’s probably paid a huge salary to be an expert on companies, so he should come up with more interesting jargon when he’s interviewed by the BBC.

Yes, the new CEO of Twitter has a lot of wood to chop. She also has “a lot of clothes to wash” and “a lot of sidewalk to clean” and “a lot of food to cook” and “a lot of blah blah blah to blah blah blah.” We get it. She has a lot of work to do.

How sharp is your axe?

I think the big question is how much wood will she be able to chop before she gets into a fight with Elon Musk and quits or is fired from Twitter. Six months? One Year?
