What a word: “gross”

Means: “disgusting“; the opposite of attractive. Also: “repulsive,” “nauseating“

Why now: Last week was a famous hotdog-eating contest that is held every year in New York on “Independence Day” in the US. The winner was a guy named Joey Chestnut. Most people consider him the “world champion” of eating. This year he at 71 hotdogs in 10 minutes. That’s 7 hotdogs every minute; 1 hotdog every 9 seconds.

The gross part: Just thinking about having to stuff 71 hotdogs down your throat is enough to make you feel sick. Often the contestants in “competitive eating contests” actually get sick (vomit). On stage. Which is really gross. Need to see for yourself?

So many ways to say sick: The word “sick” can be confusing. The most common meaning is to describe when you’re not feeling well.

Also, sometimes it means the same as “gross” (disgusting), as in “Ew! That’s sick!” Or it can mean “bad” as in evil or immoral way.

But there’s also a more modern meaning, which is slang for “great/awesome/cool/amazing,” as in “Wow! That’s sick!”

Sick to your stomach: Finally, when someone says the phrase “I’m gonna be sick,” they’re probably not saying “I’m coming down with a cold or flu.” They usually mean “I feel nauseous” or “I feel queasy,” which both mean “I feel like I’m going to vomit.”

Note that “vomit” is a more formal/polite word. There are probably more slang words and phrases for vomit than we can count. Here are a few of the more popular ones: “puke,” “throw up,” “hurl,” “barf,” “spew,” “heave,” “blow chunks,” “upchuck” and “wretch.”
