Today’s word and its different forms – “suck,” “sucks,” “sucked” – will already be familiar to many of you. Since we say it a lot (maybe too much – that’s what our teachers and parents always told us), we wanted to explain before moving on to big lists of things that suck.
First, we’re not talking about what you do when you drink liquid from a straw or what a baby does when it “sucks” on a pacifier.
No, the “suck” we’re talking about is slang. It’s considered impolite by some people. It’s like the Thai word ห่วย, which I’m sure none of you ever use but have heard other people say 😜.
Here are a few of the most common uses:
- “You suck” = (1) an insult to show I’m angry at you or unhappy with you; or (2) it could mean you’re very bad at something (as in “you suck at tennis”)
- “That sucks” = that’s bad (and “That sucks!” = very bad / terrible); another common usage is when someone tells you something bad and you want to show you care – it’s the modern (slang) way to say “Oh that’s too bad” or “I’m sorry to hear that”
- “That sucked” = that was terrible; something bad happened
- “Sucks to be you” = an expression you would say to someone who has something bad happen to them
