When you see the words “switch” and “on” together, usually we’re talking about a light or a computer or your air conditioner — something that was “off” (because you’re not using it) that you’ve turned “on” (because you want to use it).
A Quick Quiz
But what would you think I mean if I describe a person as “switched on”? Let’s say this person is my friend Nut. Would you think:
- a) Nut is a robot and she sits in the corner until someone pushes her “start” button or says her name like “Alexa” or “Hey Siri”.
- b) Nut is a very moody person; one minute she’s “on,” the next minute she’s “off.”
- c) Nut was sleepy so she drank a triple shot of espresso and now she’s fully awake.
- d) Nut is very “knowledgable” (knows a lot).
I probably don’t need to tell you this, but the correct answer is … D.
It Means More Than Smart
Saying someone is “switched on” is not exactly the same thing as saying that person is smart/intelligent. There are some people who are very intelligent but you would not describe them as “switched on.”
Usually when you use “switched on” to describe someone, you’re saying this person is “well-informed” or an expert on a specific subject. Here’s an example:
Me: “We want to eat hotpot tonight. Where should we go?”
You: “Ask Nut. She’s really switched on.”
In this case, you only said Nut is “switched on” without being specific, but I understand from the context that Nut must know a lot about food or restaurants or hotpot.
Fast About Fashion
There’s another way to use this expression. A person can be switched on about one thing or many things. If Nut is “up” on all the current trends, meaning she always seems to have the latest information about new products, gossip, ideas, fashion and/or trends, you can say she’s “switched on.”
