Last week I went to a party to celebrate the anniversary of a famous Italian restaurant. (Congratulations, Appia!) There I saw “Jane,” a former colleague, at the party.

Jane is such a “schmoozer”! Every time I saw her, she was speaking to a different person at the party. Many of these people she had never met before. I walked by her and I could hear her say to one person, “You’re so great! I’m soooo glad to meet you!”

It was like she was a politician running for office in the recent election! In Thailand, we’ve all seen A LOT of “schmoozing” lately!

As you can read in Longdo Dictionary, “to schmooze” is “to talk with someone in a friendly way often in order to get some advantage for yourself.” And a person who schmoozes can be called “a schmooze” or “a schmoozer.”

In modern usage, “Schmooze” is not a negative or a positive word. For example, in this case, I did not mean to say bad things about Jane; I was just describing her actions. But in the past, if someone called you a “schmoozer,” they were probably not being nice!

If you really wanted to insult someone, you could call them an “ass-kisser.” This is a slang term and much stronger than “schmoozer.” It is always negative. If a politician said, “I’m going to a campaign rally to kiss ass and get votes,” it would be very strange. (But funny!)

On the other hand, the word “networking” is similar to “schmoozing.” You will often hear this used in business situations. For example, “networking events” are where people go to meet other people to make business contacts. “Networking” is a neutral or positive term, so it’s safe to use anywhere — even by politicians.
