What on earth is an “earworm“? It sounds like something painful or disgusting, but it’s actually harmless. And it’s not difficult to understand. Here’s an example.

You know the song (and video) “Baby Shark Dance”? (Don’t you hate love it?)

Let’s say you listen to this song in the morning when you’re getting ready for work or school. Or maybe you don’t even listen to “Baby Shark Dance” (or see the video); maybe you just think about the song. For the rest of the day all you “hear” (in your mind) is “Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo. Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo.”

All day: “Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo. Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo.”

All night: “Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo. Baby shark doo-doo, doo-doo, doo-doo.”

That’s an “earworm.”

Over and Over and Over

An earworm is when part of a song or other music (such as in an advertisement) that you remember is repeated over and over by your brain.

It doesn’t matter if you like the song or don’t like the song. If you hear it over and over and over, it’s an earworm.

1. Earworms are normal! You are not crazy if you can’t get a song out of your head.
2. “Earworm” comes from a German word: “ohrwurm.”
3. Over 90 percent of people experience an earworm at least once per week.
4. Another name for earworm is “sticky music.”
