Strength in Numbers

There was a time when the meaning of “having someone’s back” was literally protecting them from danger. This often meant protecting them from enemies.

You’ll see this expression used in books, films, games, etc. a lot in situations of war or fighting. If you’re in battle, you can see threats in front of you, but your weakness is your “back” side.

So you would want others to “have your back” or “watch your back” — an expression that has similar meaning.

Another related saying is “backing you up.” Imagine yourself in war. Standing alone could be scary. You would feel better if there were other soldiers behind you “backing you up,” which is another way of saying they are supporting you or “on your side.”

A Promise to Help

Nowadays “having someone’s back” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re protecting them from danger. If you say to someone “I have your back,” you’re making a promise to help them. You would say it when they expect to face some kind of challenge.

The challenge could be anywhere: at work, at school, with their hobbies, with their relationships … these are just a few examples. The assistance you give them could be time, money or advice. It could be teaching them something. It could be “standing up for them” when they receive criticism. It could also be “lending a sympathetic ear” (listening to someone’s problems).
