หลายๆคนคงงงๆกับการใช้ although , despite และ in spite of ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้ แปลว่า “ถึงม้ว่า ……. แต่” แต่หลายคนก็อาจจะใช้ผิด
ไม่ก็ใช้ตามแบบในภาษาไทยที่ต้องมีคำว่า “แต่ (but)” อยู่ในประโยคด้วย ที่จริงแล้ว ไม่ต้องใส่ but ลงในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษคะ
บางครั้งหลายคนอาจจะเข้าใจว่า มี despite of เพราะ เหมือนเคยคุ้นๆว่ามี in spite of ก็เลยเข้าใจว่า despite ก็มี of ซึ่งที่จริงแล้ว ไม่มี of คะ
รวมไปถึงคำที่จะต้องตามหลัง Although, Despite, In spite of ก็จะแตกต่างกัน ดังนี้
- Although ตามด้วย ประโยค
- Despite ตามด้วยคำนาม หรือ noun clause
- In spite of ตามด้วยคำนาม หรือ noun clause
มาดูตัวอย่างกันคะ
Although it rained, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ถูกต้อง)
Despite the rain, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ถูกต้อง)
Although she is poor, she is generous. (ประโยคนี้ถูกต้อง)
Despite being poor, she is generous. (ประโยคนี้ถูกต้อง)
แล้วมาดูประโยคที่มักใช้ผิดกันบ่อยคะ
Despite of the rain, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะ ไม่มีคำว่า despite of)
Despite it rained, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะ despite ไม่ตามด้วยประโยค)
Although the rain, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะ although ควรตามด้วยประโยค)
Although of it rained, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะไม่มีคำว่า although of)
In spite the rain, the concert still started on time. (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะ ต้องใช้ in spite of)
Despite she is poor, she is generous (ประโยคนี้ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะ despite ไม่ตามด้วยประโยค)
