The word: “Invasive”
Means: Something is “invasive” when it moves into some place or something. In many cases the thing that is invasive is unwanted or unwelcome. In can refer to many things. It could be the actions of soldiers in war. It could be a loud sound that interrupts your concentration when you are trying to study. It can be a disease.
One of the more common uses of the word is in medicine. If a procedure is “invasive” (“invasive surgery”), it means a doctor uses an instrument that will go into part of the body, such as heart surgery or any other surgery. On the other hand, if a doctor tells you something is not invasive (“non-invasive”), it could be something like an X-ray or a cast around a broken limb that is outside the body.
Why now: Did you hear about the fires on the island of Maui in Hawaii? One of the reasons the fires spread so quickly is because there were so many “invasive” grasses that burned hotter and faster than native plants.
So what: We might not know the word “invasive” or heard the term “invasive species,” but it’s a big problem in Thailand. An “invasive species” is a plant or animal that is not originally from a place. We usually talk about “invasive species” in a negative way. It’s negative when a plant or animal that is not native to an area is able to spread quickly and cause problems. An example here is water hyacinth. It is originally from South America and blocks waterways. It creates problems for boats and industries like fishing and farming.
Another example is the Pterygoplichthys, also known as the sailfin armored catfish, which were introduced to Thailand as ornamental fish. The problem they create when they get into our rivers is that they eat the eggs of native Thai catfish. There are dozens of non-native fish now banned in Thailand.
According to the United Nations, invasive species cause over $400 billion worth of harm every year.
