Most people in Thailand now know what the word “weed” means. That’s because “weed” (slang for cannabis/marijuana) is legal here and you can see it for sale in some of the ugliest and craziest looking shops.

You also probably know the “original” meaning of “weed,” which is a plant that is unwanted or not grown on purpose. If you have a garden or have worked in a garden or on a farm, you might have spent time “pulling weeds” or using chemicals to kill weeds.

But do you know the phrase “in the weeds”?

It’s a phrase that you hear a lot in restaurants. It’s definitely not a good thing to be “in the weeds.” It means you’re “overwhelmed.” You can’t keep up with your work. You’re stressed. You might be angry, or you might be anxious. You might be all of these things!

It’s terrible! I know because when I was younger I worked in restaurants. Even now I sometimes have nightmares about nights when everything seems to go wrong. Another word we used a lot was “slammed.” (“Help! I’m slammed!”) Or we’d say, “I’m in the shit!” Or worse. (Often when restaurant workers are stressed, they don’t use the most polite language. Sorry, Mom.)

“In the weeds” is mostly heard in restaurants & bars, but you can use it if you work in an office, too. Plus there are many other ways to say the same thing: “snowed under,” “drowning,” “swamped,” “buried” and “overloaded.”

Hopefully you won’t need to use these words very often.
